I was watching the Louisville-Middle Tennessee University game last night (Thursday), and it was easily one of the most entertaining football games I have seen in a long time. Through the first quarter the score was 28-21, and by no means had any signs of slowing down.
What made this incredible is that Louisville is ranked somewhere in the top 15, and Middle Tennessee was by all accounts not, and so the fact that MTU put any (forget 21) points on the board was surprising. Upset with the defense the 'Ville faithful started booing their D when one commentaor uttered a phrase that made me shutter:
"I don't think you should ever boo college athletes."
Maybe its because they don't get paid. Well this can't be it because I'm pretty sure all of Louisville's starters are scholarship athletes, so they arent paying the tuition, room, or board that the other 30,000 students pay. Granted there are academic scholarships, but I dont think anyone on either sideline has cracked a book since Matt Christopher (you know what I'm talking about). So these kids are saving between $70-90,000, I consider that getting paid.
Shit I pay $35,000 a year, and for that much I'll boo whoever the fuck I want.
I contend that if a professor is too boring or monotone (read: Sadowski) or simply reads off the slides provided by the publisher, they should be subject to the same taunts and jeers as the athletes or entertainers I pay to attend.
I should be able to boo other students who suck at things, school, group projects, their jobs, intramurals...cry about it.
But in the words of a certain AD, "Be loud, be proud, be positive!"
(I think I just puked a little.)
